Currently there are around 50 neighborhoods or Mohallas and around 50,000 residents living on the Dal Lake. For this study, six neighborhoods were selected of which five lie within the limits of the Dal Lake and one is in Rakh e Arath or the low lying area to its south west to which many lake dwellers have been relocated. Rakh-e-Arath is situated roughly - kilometers (-miles) from the lake. The neighborhoods were selected based on the craft most. popular or most practiced by its residents.

The selected Mohallas studied are as follows:

1.Moti Mohalla

2. Tind Mohalla

3. Sheikh Mohalla

4. Malla Mohalla Abi Karpora

5. Houseboat Area, Abi. Karpora
